What Are Aqueous Coatings?
Aqueous coatings are water-based solutions that are applied to the inner surface of paper products to make them leak-resistant and durable. They are made by submerging synthetic polymers in water and then applying the mixture to the paper. Once the water evaporates, it leaves behind a thin layer of polymers that adhere to the paper fibres to create a barrier that helps prevent liquid from seeping through.
Home Compostable
Our Aqueous Hot Cup and Paper Cup are certified home compostable items, and can simply be placed in the home compost bin. Such products will have been through a rigorous testing regime by an accredited laboratory in order to meet the necessary legal standards. These products will bare the appropriate home composting conformity mark e.g. ‘OK compost HOME’ or 'Din Certco certified home compostable' logo. This means all components and materials used in that item will compost down into carbon dioxide, water, inorganic compounds and biomass with no visible contaminants or toxic residues. Worthy of note however, temperatures in a garden compost heap do vary and tend to be lower and less stable than in an industrial composting environment. However, if you do not have a home compost bin, contact your local council to determine the nearest industrial composting facility.
Industrial Compostable
With regards to industrial/ commercial composting elevated temperatures, the presence of oxygen and a higher humidity are used to compost items quicker. Industrially compostable products must also be rigorously tested by an accredited laboratory to meet certain conditions and bare the appropriate industrially compostable mark such as the EU Standard EN13432, and carry the seedling logo, ‘OK compost INDUSTRIAL’ or 'Din Certco certified Industrial Compostable' conformity mark.

In addition to First Mile, we are partners with The National Cup Recycling Scheme (NCRS) who also offer nationwide collection schemes for paper cups along with organisations such as Veolia and The Cup Collective.
While all major food service retail stores and outlets, such as Costa and McDonald’s, along with establishments like shopping centres and offices, have already implemented dedicated cup collection points, this will become mandatory in the very near future. The takeback scheme will require all businesses with ten or more full-time employees that provide consumers with beverages in fibre-based composite cups filled at the point of sale to have visible bins on their premises for the collection of cups after use.
